Murten, located on the southeast shore of the lake of the same name in the Canton of Fribourg, is a historically significant town with an exceptionally well-preserved medieval core. Its foundation dates back to the Zähringers in the 12th century, and the city wall from the 13th to 15th centuries is almost completely accessible. The town gained worldwide fame through the Battle of Murten in 1476, in which the Confederates defeated Charles the Bold of Burgundy. This event is still commemorated annually with the Murten Run. The town lies on the linguistic border between German and French, which shapes its cultural identity. In addition to its architecture, Murten is an important center for tourism on Lake Murten, offering a variety of water sports. The narrow streets of the old town and the arcades give the place a specific atmosphere, complemented by numerous cultural events such as the Festival of Lights. Geographically, the town forms the gateway to the Seeland and is an important transport hub in the region. Agriculture, especially viticulture on nearby Mont Vully, also plays an economic role for the local community.
