💡 Tips
- The old village center is car-free. Leave your car in the designated car parks at the entrance to the village and explore the alleys on foot.
- The famous red geraniums that adorn the wooden houses are in full bloom during July and August.
- Use the PostBus to discover other villages in the Val d'Anniviers, like Zinal or St-Luc. The Anniviers Liberté pass in summer features free transport.
- Take a bus trip up to the Moiry Dam. The intense turquoise colour of the lake against the backdrop of the glaciers is unforgettable.
🍽 Food
Enjoy an authentic raclette in a restaurant, where the wheel of cheese is melted by a fire and scraped onto your plate.
Ask for this unique, oxidative wine in a local cellar ('caveau'). It is not sold by the bottle but served by the glass.
Try this air-dried beef specialty, often served as a platter with rye bread and gherkins.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy a block of raclette cheese from a local cheese dairy ('fromagerie') to take a piece of Valais tradition home with you.
Find a bakery that sells the traditional Valais rye bread, which pairs perfectly with cheese and dried meat.
Get lost in the narrow, flower-filled alleys early in the morning or late in the evening when the day-trippers have gone.
A hike near the Moiry reservoir lake provides tranquility and spectacular scenery.
A short walk up to the chapel provides a peaceful atmosphere and a lovely view over the village.

Grimentz in the Val d'Anniviers is considered one of Switzerland's most beautiful villages. Its closely packed larch wood houses have turned almost black from decades of sun exposure, creating a spectacular contrast with the bright red geraniums on balconies in summer. The village center is car-free and has maintained its medieval structure. A unique local tradition is 'Glacier Wine' (Vin du Glacier), which ages in larch barrels in the town hall cellars and is never completely emptied. Above the village lies an extensive hiking and skiing area stretching to the Moiry Glacier. The Moiry Dam with its turquoise waters is a popular summer destination. Grimentz is also known for Valais culinary traditions like dried meat and raclette. The best time to visit is summer for alpine hiking or winter for snow sports away from large crowds. Access is via Sierre and then by postal bus through the steep Val d'Anniviers.
