💡 Tips
- Book your train tickets online in advance, especially during high season. This secures your spot and helps you avoid long queues at the ticket counter.
- Be sure to check the live webcam from Jungfraujoch before you depart. If the weather is bad and visibility is zero, the expensive trip isn't worth the money.
- Allow plenty of time for the journey. The cogwheel train ride from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen via Kleine Scheidegg is an experience in itself.
- Move slowly at the altitude of 3,454 meters (11,332 ft). The thin air can cause headaches or dizziness. Drink plenty of water.
- Even in summer, bring warm clothing and sunglasses. It's always cold at the summit, and the sun's radiation is intense.
🍽 Food
The restaurants on the Jungfraujoch are expensive. Save money by bringing your own sandwich to enjoy on the Plateau with a panoramic view.
Visit the world's highest Lindt shop. You can see the chocolate-making process and, of course, do some shopping.
After your return, try this hearty dish of macaroni, potatoes, cheese, and onions in a traditional restaurant in Grindelwald or Wengen.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
There are several watch shops at the summit. Even if you don't buy anything, it's an experience to see luxury watches in such an extreme location.
Find unique souvenirs with the 'Top of Europe' branding, from clothing to mugs, as proof of your visit to the highest railway station in Europe.
Walk through the corridors and past the sculptures carved entirely from ice. The cool, blue atmosphere is surprisingly calm.
Step outside the main building onto the snowfield. A few steps away from the door, and you can feel the silence of the high alpine world.
On the way down, get off at this small station. Sit on a bench, enjoy the view of the Lauterbrunnen valley, and wait for the next train.
Water temperature…
Jungfraujoch, known as the 'Top of Europe,' is a high-alpine saddle located between the peaks of Mönch and Jungfrau at 3,454 meters. The journey itself is an engineering marvel: the Jungfrau Railway has been operating since 1912, traveling through a seven-kilometer tunnel bored directly into the rock of the Eiger and Mönch. Upon arrival, visitors find a world of ice and snow accessible year-round. The Sphinx Observatory terrace features panoramic views that, on clear days, stretch as far as the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. Main attractions include the Ice Palace, a labyrinth of tunnels carved directly into the glacier featuring intricate ice sculptures. The Alpine Sensation exhibition commemorates the pioneers who built the railway under extreme conditions. During summer, the Snow Fun Park gives opportunities for sledding and skiing on the glacier plateau. The scientific research station at Jungfraujoch is one of the highest in the world, providing crucial atmospheric data. Dining options range from Swiss fondue to international cuisine in several restaurants. The modern Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald Terminal significantly reduces travel time to the top. It is best to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the clearest views. Due to the extreme altitude, warm clothing and sun protection are essential even in mid-summer.
