Bagnes stretches across a vast area in the Valais Alps and is historically and geographically one of the region's most significant valleys. In 2021, the municipality of Bagnes merged with Vollèges to form the new municipality of Val de Bagnes, which is among the largest in Switzerland by area. The heart of the region is the internationally renowned ski resort of Verbier, which attracts thousands of winter sports enthusiasts and celebrities every year. However, Bagnes is much more than just a tourist destination. The valley is deeply rooted in alpine agriculture and is famous for the production of Raclette cheese, which has a long tradition here. Geographically, the valley is traversed by the Dranse de Bagnes River and terminates in the south at the imposing Mauvoisin Dam, one of the highest arch dams in the world. The landscape is characterized by majestic peaks such as the Grand Combin, which dominates the panorama. In addition to skiing, Bagnes gives a vast network of hiking trails and mountain bike paths that lead through untouched nature reserves. Culturally, the residents place great importance on preserving old customs, such as the Eringer cow fights. The architecture in the lower-lying villages like Le Châble preserves the charm of traditional Valais wooden houses, while Verbier showcases modern alpine architecture. Bagnes thus uniquely combines technological progress through hydroelectric power with exclusive tourism and an authentic alpine way of life.
