💡 Tips
- Access the forest via cable cars from the valley villages (Mörel, Betten, Fiesch) to the car-free resorts of Riederalp, Bettmeralp, or Fiescheralp.
- For the best glacier views, hike up to one of the viewpoints like Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn. The view changes dramatically with the time of day.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots. Even on easy trails, the terrain can be uneven, and the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
- Visit the Pro Natura Center Villa Cassel on the Riederalp to learn about the unique alpine flora and fauna and the history of the region.
🍽 Food
A platter of local air-dried meats, bacon, and cheese. Find it in any mountain restaurant (Bergrestaurant) on Riederalp or Bettmeralp.
Melted cheese scraped over potatoes, served with pickles and onions. A true Valais classic, best enjoyed after a long hike.
A hearty potato, vegetable, and cheese pie. According to legend, it was created during a cholera epidemic using pantry staples.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for 'Aletschkäse' in the village dairies or small shops. Its flavor is shaped by the alpine herbs the cows graze on.
The Aletsch Forest has many ancient stone pines ('Arve'). Look for small carvings, pillows filled with pine shavings, or essential oils. The scent is said to promote good sleep.
A calm alpine lake near Bettmeralp. Take a gentle walk around its shores for peaceful moments away from the main glacier viewpoints.
Follow the signs for the lower-altitude trails deep within the forest itself, away from the glacier's edge. You'll find ancient trees and a profound sense of quiet.
The wide-open alpine meadows of Fiescheralp offer vast spaces and panoramic views with fewer crowds than the main trails.
Water temperature…
The Aletsch Forest stretches across a moraine above the Great Aletsch Glacier in the canton of Valais. It consists primarily of stone pines (Arven), with some specimens being over 900 years old. Protected since 1933, the forest is a key part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. A well-developed trail network connects Riederalp with Bettmeralp, leading hikers through this primeval landscape with constant views of the largest glacier in the Alps. At the forest's center, in Villa Cassel, lies the Pro Natura Center Aletsch, providing insights into the area's ecology. The forest is also a vital habitat for the nutcracker bird, which plays a crucial role in forest regeneration by caching pine seeds. The region is car-free and accessible only by cable car. The best time to visit is October, when the larches turn golden yellow, providing a striking contrast to the white glacial ice.
