🍽 Food
A slice of bread soaked in wine, covered with rich Alpine cheese and baked until bubbling. Find it in most village restaurants for a filling lunch.
In summer, try a slice of this delicious tart made with apricots from the Valais, famous for their intense flavor.
An iconic Swiss experience. Enjoy a cheese fondue on a restaurant terrace with a view of the mountains after a day of hiking.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The village grocery stores and small farm shops often sell 'Alpenblütenhonig' (Alpine flower honey), a sweet souvenir from the meadows.
On weekends, pick up a traditional braided 'Zopf' bread from the local bakery for a delicious breakfast.
Walk the circular path early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the daytime crowds and enjoy the peaceful reflection of the mountains.
Hike up to the historic Wurzenbord area with its old chalets. It's less frequented than the main village and feels like stepping back in time.
Take the trail leading west from the village towards Goppisberg. It features beautiful views down the Rhône Valley and is much quieter than the glacier-side paths.

Bettmeralp sits at an altitude of 1,950 meters and is the animated heart of the Aletsch Arena. The village's landmark is the white chapel 'Maria zum Schnee', one of the most photographed motifs in the Swiss Alps. As the resort is completely car-free, guests enjoy an incomparable silence, punctuated only by the ringing of cowbells or the hum of mountain lifts. The architecture is dominated by cozy chalets that blend harmoniously into the alpine landscape. Directly above the village, the Bettmerhorn has a spectacular view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The nearby Lake Bettmer invites visitors in summer for swimming, stand-up paddling, or fishing. For sports enthusiasts, the region provides numerous mountain bike trails and challenging via ferratas. In winter, Bettmeralp is a snowy paradise with direct access to the slopes. Access is easy via the large cable car from the Betten valley station, where Matterhorn Gotthard Railway trains provide seamless transfers.
