Mund (Switzerland)

Weather…

Mund, located on the sunny southern slope above Naters, is a culinary and historical rarity. For centuries, 'Crocus sativus' has been cultivated here, with its stigmas yielding the precious Mund saffron. The dry climate and sandy soil provide good conditions for this 'red gold'. Every October, the fields bloom in violet, and harvesting is done by painstaking handwork. A saffron educational trail and a small museum inform visitors about the history and techniques of this extraordinary cultivation. The village itself impresses with its well-preserved wooden houses and proximity to the historic 'Suonen', traditional Valais irrigation channels. The 'Wyssa' suone features a spectacular hike along steep rock faces. In local restaurants, saffron is the star ingredient: from saffron risotto and pasta to the famous Mund saffron bread. Mund is a place for slowing down and gives fantastic views of the Valais High Alps. Access is by post bus from Brig or Naters via a road full of hairpin bends.
