Wil is a significant regional center in the Fürstenland region and is known as the Abbot's City because it was owned by the Prince-Abbots of St. Gallen for over 500 years. The city is strategically located between St. Gallen and Zurich and serves as the gateway to the Toggenburg region. The historic old town on the hill is considered one of the most valuable in the region; it is characterized by striking half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and the dominant Hof zu Wil. This impressive ensemble of buildings served as the residence and administrative center for the abbots. Economically, Wil has evolved from a medieval market town into a modern service and industrial hub, with its convenient location on Switzerland's east-west axis being a decisive factor. A modern landmark is the Wiler Turm on the Hofberg, a wooden structure offering panoramic views stretching to Lake Constance and into the Alps. The city places great emphasis on preserving its cultural heritage, as reflected in numerous events and museums. The combination of historical substance and modern quality of life makes Wil an attractive residential area at the edge of the Appenzell Alps.
