Buchs is the economic and educational center of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. The city is strategically located on the right bank of the Rhine and is separated from the Principality of Liechtenstein only by the river. Historically, Buchs was a rural village for a long time, experiencing rapid development with the construction of the railway in the 19th century. Today, Buchs railway station is a significant international border station for traffic between Switzerland, Austria, and Eastern Europe. The city is also known as an important educational location, particularly through the Interstate Technical University Buchs (NTB), which is now part of the OST Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences. The townscape of Buchs is a blend of modern architecture and bustling shopping streets, such as Bahnhofstrasse, which is considered one of the region's longest shopping miles. Despite its industrial and commercial presence, Buchs has a high quality of life. The nearby Gretschins hill provides a beautiful view, and Werdenberg Castle is only a few kilometers away. For nature lovers, the Rhine embankments are handy for cycling and inline skating. The city also serves as an important service center for the surrounding communities on both sides of the Rhine and is excellently accessible via the A13 motorway.
