Kyburg Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Kyburg Castle is one of the most significant hilltop fortresses in Eastern Switzerland, standing majestically above the Töss Valley in the Canton of Zurich. The complex was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Kyburg, who were among the most powerful noble families in the Holy Roman Empire during the 12th and 13th centuries. Following the extinction of the Kyburg line in 1264, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs, who periodically kept the Imperial Regalia within its walls. In 1424, the city of Zurich assumed control and utilized the castle as the seat of their bailiffs until 1798. The architectural ensemble features Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements, including a massive keep and a Gothic chapel with notable wall paintings. Since 1999, the castle has been managed by a private foundation and houses an internationally acclaimed museum detailing the history of knighthood and aristocratic life.
