Glattburg Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Glattburg Castle ruins are located in the municipality of Oberbüren in the Canton of St. Gallen and were once the ancestral seat of the Schenken von Glattburg, a prominent ministerial family of the Princely Abbey of St. Gallen. The complex was built in the 13th century on a wooded ridge above the Glatt River to secure the surrounding lands and transport routes. The fortress was the scene of numerous regional conflicts and changed owners several times before finally coming into the possession of the city of St. Gallen in the 15th century. Following a fire and the gradual abandonment of military use, the castle fell into decay and at times served as a quarry for local building projects. Today, parts of the curtain wall and foundations of the residential tower are still visible from the once-proud site, which is protected as a cantonal cultural asset. The ruin is integrated into a network of hiking trails and provides an authentic impression of High Medieval noble culture in Eastern Switzerland.
