Rauhenstein Castle
The Rauhenstein castle ruins are located in the Helenental valley near Baden bei Wien and represent one of the region's most significant medieval fortifications. Although the ID suggests a Swiss location, the historical Rauhenstein Castle is fundamentally linked to Austrian noble history. The fortress was built in the 12th century by the Tursen family of Rauhenstein to monitor transit routes through the valley. Over the centuries, the site changed ownership multiple times and withstood various sieges until it eventually fell into disrepair during the 18th century. The massive keep, which still stands approximately 15 meters tall, serves as a testament to the castle's former defensive capabilities. Today, the ruins are a popular hiking destination, offering wide views of the Helenental and the surrounding Vienna Woods. Preservation efforts in recent decades have secured the remaining masonry, allowing for safe public access.
