Stein Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Stein Castle, also known as the Stein Ruins, crowns the Schlossberg hill above the town of Baden in the Canton of Aargau. Founded in the 11th century by the Counts of Lenzburg, it was later expanded into one of the Habsburgs' most vital administrative centers. For a time, it housed the Habsburg archives and the Imperial Regalia, highlighting the fortress's immense significance. In 1415, the Swiss Confederates conquered the site and partially destroyed it, though it was later rebuilt as a Bernese fortress. During the Second Villmergen War in 1712, following a siege by troops from Zurich and Bern, the castle was blown up and completely leveled, with only the chapel remaining intact. Today, the extensive ruins serve as a monument to Switzerland's denominational wars, providing a splendid view over Baden's old town and the Limmat Valley.
