Konzilgebäude Konstanz (Germany)

Weather…

The Konzilgebäude in Konstanz is one of the most significant secular medieval buildings in Southern Germany and has a history of over 600 years. Originally, the massive stone building was constructed between 1388 and 1391 as a municipal warehouse and granary directly on the shores of Lake Constance. It achieved worldwide fame during the Council of Constance (1414-1418), serving as the meeting place and venue for the only papal election ever held on German soil. In 1417, Pope Martin V was elected here, ending the Western Schism. The building impresses with its robust architecture featuring three stories and a massive hipped roof. After various uses as a warehouse and festival hall, it now serves as a congress center and restaurant. In front of the building stands the famous Imperia statue, which satirically commemorates the time of the council. Today, the Konzilgebäude is a central cultural monument of the city of Konstanz and a landmark at the harbor.
