Au is located in the lower St. Gallen Rhine Valley, tucked away between the Rhine and the foothills of the Appenzell region. The municipality also includes the villages of Heerbrugg and Monstein. Au has developed over recent decades into one of the canton's strongest economic hubs. The dominant player is SFS Group, a world leader in fastening technology, headquartered in Heerbrugg. This industrial prowess has led to steady population growth and excellent infrastructure. Geographically, its position in the border triangle (Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein) is of great significance for trade and logistics. The Alpine Rhine forms the natural eastern border, while the Rhine Valley inland canal flows through the area, serving as a vital drainage system and local recreation zone. Despite its industrial nature, Au provides idyllic spots, particularly in higher areas with views across the Rhine Valley to Lake Constance. Viticulture is still practiced on the sunny slopes of the Monstein hill. Culturally, Au is closely linked with neighboring Berneck and Widnau. Access to the A13 motorway and Heerbrugg railway station makes Au a central transport hub for the region. The municipality continuously invests in modern educational facilities and attractive residential areas to ensure a high quality of life for families and professionals.
