Neuburg Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Neuburg Castle ruins tower high above the Untersee near Mammern in the Canton of Thurgau and are considered the largest castle ruins in the canton. It was built around 1250 by the Barons of Neuburg, who administered the surrounding land as a fief of the Reichenau Abbey. The extensive complex consisted of a core castle with a palas and a massive keep, complemented by a spacious outer bailey, highlighting the owners' defensiveness and status. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, eventually coming into the possession of the Bishopric of Constance. In the 18th century, the site was finally abandoned and fell into ruin until it was secured with public funds in the 20th century. The ruin is now a popular destination for hikers, offering not only historical insights into medieval fortress architecture but also an impressive panoramic view over Lake Constance and the surrounding countryside.
