Geochang
Geochang is located deep in the inland mountains, surrounded by the majestic peaks of Deogyusan, Jirisan, and Gayasan National Parks. The city is a cultural hub, most famous for the Geochang International Festival of Theatre (GIFT), featuring outdoor performances set against memorable natural backdrops. The region's centerpiece is Suseungdae, a scenic valley with a famous turtle-shaped rock and historic pavilions that have inspired poets and scholars for centuries. Nature lovers will find numerous hiking trails and crystal-clear mountain streams throughout Geochang. The Geochang Changpo-won is an expansive botanical garden, particularly spectacular during the iris bloom in spring. The area is also rich in Confucian heritage, visible in the many well-preserved private academies (Seowon) and traditional Korean houses. The combination of fresh mountain air and cultural depth makes Geochang a convenient destination for 'slow travel' seekers. In agriculture, Geochang is famous for its sweet apples and grapes, which benefit from the significant temperature difference between day and night. A local culinary specialty is Geochang-style Bulgogi. The best time to visit is mid-summer for the theater festival or autumn for apple picking and vivid fall foliage. Geochang is most easily reached by express bus from Daegu or Jinju, as it serves as a central hub for the surrounding highlands.
