Bonghwa is a lesser-known spot tucked away in the mountainous northern part of North Gyeongsang Province. The region is celebrated for its pristine natural environment and features the highest concentration of traditional pavilions and historic clan houses in Korea. A standout experience is riding the V-Train (Valley Train), which winds through the deep gorges and lush forests of the Baekdudaegan mountain range, offering dramatic vistas unreachable by road. Buncheon Station in the area has been transformed into a year-round 'Santa Village', making it a hit with families. Bonghwa is also the hub for one of Korea's most prized culinary delicacies: pine mushrooms (Song-i). Every autumn, the city hosts the Pine Mushroom Festival, where visitors can try their hand at mushroom picking and savor them in various local dishes. For cultural enthusiasts, Dak-sil Village is; it is a traditional clan village featuring centuries-old houses and a serene pond. Nearby Mt. Cheongnyangsan provides spectacular hiking, with jagged peaks and a historic temple that appears to cling dramatically to a cliff face. Due to its remote location, Bonghwa is best reached by train or car. The train journey from Seoul itself features spectacular views of the rural Korean heartland. The best time to visit is during autumn for the mushroom harvest and fall foliage, or in winter when the Santa Village is at its most festive. Bonghwa is a well-suited destination for travelers seeking tranquility, mountain hiking, and a taste of traditional life in one of Korea's most naturally preserved corners. Be sure to sample the local cuisine featuring mountain herbs and the famous pine mushrooms.
