Juba Sugar Estate (Somalia)

Weather…

The Juba Sugar Estate is located in the fertile Juba Valley in the Jubaland region of southern Somalia. The estate was founded in the 1920s during the Italian colonial period and was once one of East Africa's largest sugar producers. The plantation covers about 10,000 hectares, irrigated by the Juba River. In the 1980s, the factory produced over 50,000 tonnes of sugar annually. During the civil war, the facility was heavily damaged and production ceased. After years of decay, there have been recent revival efforts led by the Somali government and international investors. Currently, a pilot phase with limited sugarcane processing is underway. Restoring full production would create thousands of jobs and reduce dependence on sugar imports. Challenges include security, dilapidated infrastructure, and land tenure disputes.
