Gavarnie is a jewel of the Central Pyrenees, captivating visitors not by its size but by its overwhelming natural backdrop. Located at the end of the valley, the village serves as the gateway to the Cirque de Gavarnie, a massive rock amphitheater six kilometers in diameter. Victor Hugo once called this place the "Colosseum of nature." The vertical rock walls rise up to 1500 meters above the valley floor and house the Grande Cascade, which, with a drop of 422 meters, is one of the highest in Europe. Despite its small permanent population of fewer than 200 people, the village becomes a lively hub for mountaineers and hikers in summer. In winter, the region transforms into a quiet ski area, particularly attractive to ice climbers who challenge themselves on the frozen waterfalls of the cirque.
