Lannemezan is located in the heart of the Pyrenean foothills on a distinctive plateau that shares its name. The town has a long history as a marketplace and strategic crossroads between the mountainous regions and the plains of Gascony. During the 20th century, Lannemezan developed into a major industrial hub, particularly in the chemical and electrochemical sectors, fueled by hydroelectric power from the nearby mountains. Despite its industrial base, the city has maintained its character as a regional commercial center. The climate is significantly influenced by the proximity of the mountains, often resulting in cooler temperatures and higher rainfall than the surrounding lowlands. Lannemezan also serves as a gateway to the Pyrenean natural parks and has an excellent infrastructure for sports and education, including a historically significant psychiatric hospital.
