Grande Cascade de Gavarnie (France)

Weather…

The Grande Cascade de Gavarnie is the highest waterfall in mainland France, located within the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie in the Pyrenees. The waterfall drops a total of 422 meters in two distinct tiers and is primarily fed by snowmelt from the Spanish Lac Glacé, situated at a higher elevation. Geographically, it is part of the Pyrenees National Park and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Pyrenees-Mont Perdu.' The water filters through the limestone rock and re-emerges on the face of the glacial cirque, creating a world-class natural wonder. The Cirque de Gavarnie itself was formed by massive glacial erosion over millions of years, featuring nearly vertical rock walls reaching up to 1,500 meters. Historically, the site was praised by luminaries such as Victor Hugo, who referred to it as the 'colosseum of nature.' A relatively easy hike from the village of Gavarnie leads to the base of the falls, where the mist from the crashing water provides a refreshing breeze.
