Savo Island Wrecks (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

The waters surrounding Savo Island are home to one of the most significant underwater military graveyards in the world, famously known as 'Ironbottom Sound'. On August 9, 1942, the Battle of Savo Island occurred here, marking a disastrous defeat for the Allied forces during the Guadalcanal campaign. In a swift night-time surface action, a Japanese strike force commanded by Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa sank three U.S. cruisers and the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra. The wrecks of these vessels, including the USS Quincy, USS Vincennes, and USS Astoria, now rest on the ocean floor at depths ranging from 600 to over 1,000 meters. Due to the extreme depth, they are unreachable by recreational divers but were extensively mapped and filmed during Robert Ballard's 1990s expeditions. The site is recognized as a protected war grave, preserving the memory of the thousands of sailors who perished in the freezing depths. Savo Island's central position in the 'Slot' made it a focal point for naval engagements throughout late 1942 as both sides fought for dominance in the Solomon archipelago.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
Visiting this sprawling underwater battlefield requires specialized scuba diving certification, as the numerous wrecked cruisers and destroyers lie submerged deep beneath the waves. Nondivers can only experience the haunting history from the surface by traversing the strait via boat and reflecting on the sheer scale of the historic naval engagements.
🕒
Typical hours
Dive operators in Honiara generally schedule expeditions strictly during optimal morning or early afternoon hours to take advantage of the calmest sea surface conditions and superior underwater visibility. Due to the significant depths and often strong tidal currents, sunset or night diving at these specific wreck sites is almost universally strictly prohibited.
📷
Photography
The eerie, coral-encrusted remains of these mighty warships provide some of the world's most spectacular and sobering subjects for advanced underwater photography. Specialized strobe lighting and robust underwater housings are absolutely crucial here, as the ambient natural light diminishes rapidly before you reach the most profound sections of the wrecks.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring a single shipwreck via a technical dive will naturally consume about half a day when factoring in the boat transit, the complex dive itself, and required surface intervals. Avid wreck enthusiasts often book multi-day liveaboard itineraries to methodically experience several different sunken vessels spread across the historical Ironbottom Sound.
Combine with
This technical underwater exploration aligns perfectly with terrestrial history tours visiting the Vilu War Museum or the American Memorial positioned high on Skyline Ridge overlooking the sound. For a well-rounded itinerary, follow your deep-sea adventures with a relaxing, culturally enriching day spent wandering the volcanic trails of Savo Island itself.
🧭
Getting there
Reaching these profound and historically sensitive marine sites is exclusively achieved by booking charters with certified, specialized dive centers based out of the capital city, Honiara. These professional outfits provide the necessary dive boats, highly trained local divemasters, and the crucial breathing gas mixtures required to safely descend to these solemn depths.
💡
Insider tip
Because the vast majority of these majestic warships rest at depths well beyond standard recreational limits, ensuring you hold advanced technical or deep-diving certifications before arriving is paramount. Divers are also sternly reminded that these sites are highly respected underwater war graves, so touching, entering, or removing any historical artifacts is strictly prohibited by law.
