Point Cruz (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Point Cruz is a prominent peninsula and the natural deep-water harbor that serves as the gateway to Honiara. Named by the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña in 1568 after he erected a cross on the site, the point became a focal point of intense tactical maneuvers during the 1942 Guadalcanal Campaign. The harbor was a primary landing site for Japanese reinforcements and later a vital Allied logistics hub once the perimeter was expanded. Some of the most significant naval skirmishes occurred just offshore, contributing to the collection of wrecks in the Ironbottom Sound. In the post-war era, the strategic advantages of the harbor led to the selection of Honiara as the national capital. Today, Point Cruz remains the commercial heart of the Solomon Islands, hosting the main wharf, the Yacht Club, and memorials to local scouts and coastwatchers who played a pivotal role in the Allied victory.
