Vilu War Museum (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

The Vilu War Museum is an evocative open-air collection located approximately 25 kilometers west of Honiara. Established by a local man named Anderson Dua, the museum features a wide array of salvaged military hardware from the Guadalcanal Campaign. Visitors can walk among the remains of significant aircraft, including a remarkably well-preserved US Grumman F4F Wildcat, a Chance Vought F4U Corsair, and the wreckage of a Japanese Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty' bomber. The site also displays various field guns, anti-aircraft weaponry, and several memorial plaques dedicated to the different nations involved in the conflict. Unlike a traditional indoor museum, Vilu provides a visceral connection to the past, as the jungle slowly reclaim some of the metal relics. It stands as a testament to the scale of the aerial and ground combat and remains one of the most visited historical sites in the Solomon Islands.
