Gavutu Island (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Gavutu is a small island in the Florida group that functioned as a significant seaplane base during World War II. Prior to the war, it was a commercial hub for the copra industry, operated by Lever's Pacific Plantations. Following the Japanese occupation in 1942, the island was transformed into a military outpost for naval aviation. The assault by US Marines in August 1942 proved to be one of the costliest phases of the Tulagi invasion, as Japanese defenders utilized a complex network of caves and tunnels within the island's coral hills. American forces were forced to use demolition charges and flamethrowers to clear these fortified positions in intense close-quarters combat. Today, Gavutu is largely uninhabited and reclaimed by jungle, yet the remnants of concrete seaplane ramps and blasted cave entrances serve as a stark memorial to the fierce battles fought on its shores.
