Aola is located on the northeastern coast of Guadalcanal and is a historically significant site featuring a natural deep-water harbor in Aola Bay. During the Guadalcanal campaign of World War II, Aola was the site of strategic landings by US forces in November 1942 to establish a base for the offensive against Japanese positions. Geographically, the area is characterized by broad coastal plains watered by numerous rivers, making it convenient for agriculture and forestry. Today, Aola primarily serves as a loading station for the timber industry, with large quantities of round logs being shipped for export. The community consists of several traditional villages whose social fabric is closely tied to the sea and the management of the surrounding forests. Despite its industrial importance, Aola remains a rural location that reflects the typical coastal culture of the Solomon Islands.
