The Ormož Basins Nature Reserve, situated in northeastern Slovenia, covers approximately 55 hectares and represents a crucial wetland ecosystem formed from former wastewater treatment basins of a local sugar factory. Since the factory's closure in 2006, the area has been successfully rehabilitated into a primary nesting and stopover site for numerous migratory bird species, including the rare black-winged stilt. The reserve is characterized by shallow pools, reed beds, and mudflats, providing a diverse range of habitats for over 260 bird species recorded to date. It is managed by the DOPPS - BirdLife Slovenia and is recognized as a site of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since 2017. Visitors can observe the wildlife from specialized hides and an educational trail that circles the lagoons. The site serves as a vital biological corridor between the Drava River and the surrounding agricultural landscape, highlighting the potential for industrial land reclamation.

Best season
The Ormož Basin is a birdwatcher's paradise during the spring and autumn migration periods. In summer, many species breed here, and in winter the open water surfaces provide habitat for waterfowl.
Best time of day
The best time is in the early morning, when birds sing loudly and actively forage. Just before sunset, many species are also on the move, especially along the shallow banks.
Etiquette
Keep a distance from breeding colonies and use the available observation platforms. Avoid noise and sudden movements to avoid startling the birds.
What to bring
A spotting scope or high-magnification binoculars are good for detailed bird observation. Waterproof shoes are advisable, as the terrain can be wet and muddy.

The Ormož Basin is located near the town of Ormož and is accessible by car. There is a car park at the edge of the protected area, from where a short path leads to the observation hides.
