Arboretum Opeka (Croatia)

Weather…

Arboretum Opeka is located in the municipality of Vinica near Varaždin and is part of a historical manor estate dating back to the 17th century. The arboretum was founded in 1860 by Count Marko Bombelles, who brought numerous exotic trees and plants from his travels around the world. Spanning approximately 64 hectares, it is the largest and most significant arboretum in Northern Croatia. The park is designed in the style of an English landscape garden and hosts more than 180 different plant species, including rare specimens of ginkgo, giant sequoias, and various cedar species. Although Opeka Castle suffered severe damage and fell into ruin following World War II, the botanical collection remained largely intact. Currently, the arboretum is protected as a monument of park architecture and is undergoing phased restoration to preserve its cultural and scientific value.
