The Old Castle of Celje, once the ancestral seat of the powerful Counts of Celje, is the largest medieval castle complex in Slovenia. Perched on a steep hill overlooking the city, the fortress was originally built in the 12th century and underwent massive expansion during the 14th and 15th centuries as the Counts rose to become one of Central Europe's most influential dynasties. The complex features a prominent four-story keep known as Frederick's Tower, alongside extensive outer wards and residential buildings. After the dynasty died out in 1456, the castle gradually fell into disrepair and was used as a stone quarry for local construction in the 18th century. Extensive restoration efforts began in the 20th century, making the castle one of the country's premier cultural monuments today. Visitors can climb the restored towers and explore the museum dedicated to the dynasty's history. The castle now serves as a spirited venue for medieval festivals and cultural events that bring the region's historical heritage to life.
