Vitanje Castle (Slovenia)

Weather…

Vitanje Castle, often referred to as Old Vitanje (Stari grad), is perched on a steep rocky outcrop overlooking the settlement of Vitanje in the Lower Styria region. The fortification was first mentioned in historical records in 1140, serving as an important administrative center for the Diocese of Bamberg. Its primary function was to control and protect the strategic trade route passing through the Hudinja Valley. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle was held by various noble families, including the influential Windisch-Graetz family in later periods. The structure suffered significant damage during the peasant revolts of the 15th and 16th centuries and was eventually abandoned after a catastrophic fire in 1693 caused by a lightning strike. Today, the site consists of evocative ruins, including remnants of the residential palace and defensive curtain walls. It remains a significant example of Romanesque and Gothic military architecture in Slovenia, attracting history enthusiasts and hikers who enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.
