Žiče Charterhouse, founded around 1160, was the first Carthusian monastery established outside France and Italy, serving as one of Central Europe's most significant spiritual centers during the Middle Ages. Located in a secluded valley near Slovenske Konjice, the monastery was renowned for its strict ascetic rules and high levels of scholarship. Its library was particularly notable, housing over 2,000 manuscripts in the 15th century, making it one of the largest in Europe at the time. The complex consisted of an upper monastery for choir monks and a lower monastery in Špitalič for lay brothers. Following its dissolution by Emperor Joseph II in 1782, the buildings fell into ruin, but they are now carefully preserved as an atmospheric historical site. Visitors can explore the remains of the church, the wine cellars, and Slovenia's oldest inn, Gastuž, which dates back to 1467. The charterhouse is also famous for its historic pharmacy and herbalism traditions, which are celebrated today in the restored monastic gardens.

Visiting
The impressive ruins of the Žiče Charterhouse lie in a remote valley near Slovenske Konjice and are freely accessible. You can explore the extensive grounds without any restrictions. Admission is free as it is an open ruin site.
Typical hours
As it is an open ruin, there are no fixed opening hours; the site can be entered at any time. However, due to its remote location and uneven paths, daytime visits are recommended.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the ruin site without restrictions. The pretty remains of the monastery provide excellent subjects, especially with the surrounding forest and hills as backdrop.
Time needed
Allow at least an hour for a thorough walk around the extensive ruin site. If you enjoy the tranquility and let the history sink in, you can easily spend two hours.

Combine the charterhouse visit with a trip to the nearby town of Slovenske Konjice. There you'll find a pleasant atmosphere and local cuisine. The surrounding vineyards also invite hiking.
Getting there
The ruin is best reached by car; there is a small parking lot at the end of the access road. From there, a roughly 10-minute footpath through the forest leads to the ruins. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

Bring some food with you as there are no dining facilities in the immediate vicinity. The ruin site is well-suited for a picnic amidst history and nature.
