Celje Old Castle is the largest and most historically significant medieval fortification in Slovenia, perched on a strategic hilltop overlooking the city of Celje. Its origins date back to the 12th century, but it reached its zenith during the 14th and 15th centuries as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Celje. As the most powerful noble family in the region, the Counts extended the castle into a massive complex of defensive walls, residential wings, and fortified towers. The prominent Frederick's Tower, which once served as a high-security prison, remains a key feature and has panoramic views of the Savinja Valley. Following the assassination of the last Count of Celje in 1456, the castle passed to the Habsburgs and gradually fell into disrepair over the subsequent centuries. Modern restoration efforts have stabilized the ruins, turning the site into a major cultural and tourist destination. Today, the castle hosts an array of permanent exhibitions detailing medieval life, as well as live events such as knightly tournaments and open-air concerts. It stands as a monumental symbol of Slovenian statehood and the enduring legacy of the medieval nobility.
