Mali Grad Kamnik (Slovenia)

Weather…

Mali Grad, or 'Small Castle', is a historic hilltop site that defines the skyline of Kamnik, one of Slovenia's oldest towns. Established in the 11th century by the powerful Counts of Andechs, it served as a primary residence and administrative seat for the region. The architectural centerpiece is the Romanesque chapel of St. Eligius, a rare double-story structure dating back to the late 11th century. The interior is decorated with significant Gothic frescoes from the 15th century and features a well-preserved Romanesque crypt on the lower level. While much of the original castle complex has been lost to time, the chapel remains one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the country. The site is shrouded in the local legend of Countess Veronika, who was allegedly turned into a half-serpent for her greed. Visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the medieval town center and the surrounding Kamnik-Savinja Alps, making it a key cultural landmark.
