Ljubljana Castle, the most prominent landmark of the Slovenian capital, has stood atop Castle Hill overlooking the old town for centuries. Archaeological evidence shows that the hill was inhabited as early as the 12th century BC, while most of the current fortress structure dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, following a severe earthquake in 1511 that destroyed the previous medieval castle. Over the centuries, the building served as a residence for the Dukes of Carniola, a military barracks, and even a prison before undergoing extensive renovation in the 20th century. Today, the castle functions as a major cultural center with museums, exhibitions, and event spaces, attracting thousands of visitors annually. Particularly noteworthy are the St. George's Chapel with its coat-of-arms paintings and the observation tower, which gives a panoramic view of the entire city and the Alps. The complex is now conveniently accessible by a funicular railway, linking the historical heritage with the city's modern infrastructure.
