Emona Roman Ruins (Slovenia)

Weather…

Emona, officially known as Colonia Iulia Aemona, was a prominent Roman settlement situated on the site of present-day Ljubljana, established around 14 AD. The city was strategically located along the Amber Road, serving as a vital commercial and military hub between Roman Italy and the province of Pannonia. It was laid out according to a classic Roman grid plan, featuring perpendicular streets, a central forum, temples, and a massive defensive wall fortified with 29 towers. Today, visitors to the Emona Archaeological Park can view significant remains, including house foundations with well-preserved mosaic floors and parts of the ancient sewage system. Extensive archaeological excavations in the 20th century yielded numerous artifacts, such as coins, pottery, and tombstones, which are now housed in the National Museum of Slovenia. Emona's decline began in the 5th century following invasions by the Huns and Visigoths. The Roman urban foundations continue to influence the street layout of modern Ljubljana's historic center.
