Dragon Bridge (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most) in Ljubljana is an impressive masterpiece of Vienna Secession architecture and one of the most iconic symbols of Slovenia's capital. Built between 1900 and 1901 to replace an older wooden bridge destroyed by the 1895 earthquake, it was one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe. The bridge was designed by architect Jurij Zaninović and employed the revolutionary Melan system of construction. Its most famous features are the four majestic copper dragon statues perched on the corners, which have become the defining image of Ljubljana. The dragon itself is rooted in the legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who were said to have slain a dragon in the Ljubljana marshes. In addition to the large statues, the bridge is adorned with 16 smaller dragons and ornate Art Nouveau lamp posts. Originally named the Jubilee Bridge to honor Emperor Franz Joseph I, it is now universally known as the Dragon Bridge and is protected as a technical monument of national importance.
