The Divje Babe Archaeological Park, located in a cave high above the Idrijca River near Cerkno, is one of the world's most critical sites for studying Neanderthal life. The site gained international fame in 1995 with the discovery of a perforated cave bear femur. This find is interpreted by many scientists as the oldest known musical instrument in history, widely referred to as the 'Neanderthal flute', dating back approximately 43,000 to 60,000 years. The cave itself served as a long-term shelter for both cave bears and early humans over tens of millennia. Archaeological layers excavated here reach back 80,000 years, containing evidence of prehistoric hearths and various stone tools.
