Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia, perched atop a 130-meter cliff directly overlooking Lake Bled. Its history began in 1004 when the German King Henry II gifted the Veldes estate to the Bishop of Brixen. The fortification consists of an upper and a lower courtyard, connected by a fortified staircase, reflecting architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque. The upper courtyard houses a 16th-century chapel adorned with magnificent frescoes and the castle museum, which documents the region's history from the Bronze Age to the present day. A highlight for visitors is the reconstructed Gutenberg printing works, where 16th-century printing techniques can be experienced firsthand. Its strategic location provided defense for centuries and has made it one of the most photographed sites in Slovenia. From the castle terraces, visitors can enjoy the world-famous view of the lake, the island with the Church of the Assumption, and the peaks of the Julian Alps.
