Jelovica (Slovenia)

Weather…

Jelovica is a forested high plateau located in the southeastern foothills of the Julian Alps in Slovenia. The plateau sits at an average elevation of 1100 meters and is characterized by a harsh climate and expansive old-growth forests. Geologically, Jelovica consists primarily of limestone, resulting in a surface largely devoid of water but featuring numerous deep shafts and caves. Historically, the plateau was vital to the iron industry in nearby Kropa, as it provided the charcoal necessary for forging, produced in traditional charcoal piles. Today, the area is protected under the Natura 2000 network, specifically as a habitat for endangered bird species such as the western capercaillie and the Eurasian pygmy owl. Hikers value the solitude of Jelovica compared to more tourist-heavy neighboring regions. From the plateau's rim, points like Talež offer spectacular views of Lake Bled and the Sava Valley.
