Zlaté Moravce, situated in the pretty valley of the Žitava River and surrounded by the green foothills of the Pohronský Inovec and Tribeč Mountains, is the cultural and administrative heart of the upper Žitava region in western Slovakia. As the name "Zlaté" (Golden) suggests, gold was historically panned in the region's streams, contributing to the town's early significance. The most important landmark is the majestic manor house of the Migazzi family (Kaštieľ Migazziovcov), a beautifully preserved 18th-century Baroque-Classical building that today houses the City Museum with valuable historical exhibits and a cultural center. Equally impressive is the monumental Migazzi family mausoleum in the nearby park, which captivates visitors with its unique Neo-Romanesque architecture made from unusual red brick and Carrara marble. Today, Zlaté Moravce is an industrial-agricultural town with a pleasant historical center.
