Váh River (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Váh is the longest and most voluminous river in Slovakia, stretching over 400 kilometers. It winds through the country like a blue ribbon from the mountainous north to the southern lowlands, significantly shaping the landscape and culture of the nation. The river is formed by the confluence of the White Váh, originating in the High Tatras, and the Black Váh, from the Low Tatras, in the Liptov region. Along its journey, the Váh carves deep valleys and flows past historic cities such as Žilina, Trenčín, and Piešťany, whose banks are often guarded by ancient castles. During the 20th century, the Váh Cascade was built, an extensive system of 22 reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants that regulates the river's flow and secures the country's energy supply. Before emptying into the Danube at Komárno, the river valley widens into the fertile Danubian Lowland, the agricultural heartland of Slovakia.
