Hričov Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Hričov Castle stands on a rugged rocky outcrop of the Súľov Mountains near the city of Žilina in northwestern Slovakia. As one of the oldest castles in the region, it was established shortly after the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, with its first written mention appearing in 1282. The fortress was designed to oversee the strategic Váh river valley and was the site of numerous noble feuds, most notably during the reign of Matthew Csák, who controlled it for a time. In the 16th century, the castle was seized by the notorious Podmaniczky brothers, who turned it into a base for their marauding activities. A famous local legend tells of a monk who was walled up by the castle's owner and subsequently turned to stone, a formation that can still be identified near the entrance. From the 17th century onwards, the castle lost its military relevance and was eventually abandoned, leaving behind striking ruins integrated into the natural rock landscape.
