Stužica Primeval Forest (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Stužica Primeval Forest (Stužica-prales) is one of the largest and most intact forest areas in Central Europe, located deep within the Poloniny National Park at the extreme edge of Slovakia, right at the tripoint with Ukraine and Poland. This nature reserve, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians," stretches across a deep valley at the foot of mount Kremenec. The untouched fir and beech stands, often reaching up to 300 years of age, have developed here without human intervention, creating a primordial, almost mystical landscape. The unregulated natural cycle, characterized by imposing giant trees and abundant deadwood, provides a safe haven for specialized species that depend on this specific habitat. Beyond its botanical significance, Stužica is a vital territory for bears, wolves, and the rare Eastern Carpathian population of the European bison. Scientists view the primeval forest as an invaluable open-air laboratory for researching the dynamic processes of prehistoric forest ecosystems.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Located in the extremely remote Poloniny National Park, access is usually via the village of Nová Sedlica in the far east of Slovakia. From here, long, marked hiking trails lead deep into the untouched woodland near the border.
📅
Best season
Late spring, summer, and early autumn are the only practical times to visit this remote region. Autumn is particularly impressive when the ancient beech trees turn spirited shades of copper and gold before the heavy winter snows arrive.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is genuinely wild and challenging, featuring steep muddy ascents over intertwined tree roots and fallen massive logs. The paths traverse pristine mountainous wilderness up to the Kremenec peak on the triple border.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality, waterproof hiking boots are absolutely essential for the muddy and uneven forest trails. Bring comprehensive rain gear, a physical map, and sufficient food, as there are zero facilities once you leave the village.
🅿️
Parking
There is a small designated parking area in Nová Sedlica near the national park information point. Since the area receives very few visitors compared to other parks, finding a parking space is rarely an issue.
⚠️
Safety
This is true bear and wolf territory; hikers must make noise, stay tightly on the marked trails, and never hike alone. Additionally, the proximity to the non-Schengen Ukrainian border means you must carry your passport or ID at all times.
⏱️
Time needed
The hike up through the primeval forest to the Kremenec border peak is a long, strenuous, full-day endeavor, usually taking 7 to 9 hours round trip. It is not a place for a quick walk, but rather a serious wilderness excursion.
