Bieszczady Mountains (Poland)

Weather…

The Bieszczady Mountains constitute the westernmost part of the Eastern Beskids, stretching across the far southeastern corner of Poland in a sparsely populated, profoundly natural landscape. A defining feature of this range are the 'poloniny', expansive, treeless mountain ridges and alpine meadows that spread out above the tree line at elevations starting around 1150 meters. The geological structure consists of folded flysch layers, an alternating sequence of sandstone and shale, which yields gentler slope profiles compared to alpine regions. Forests of massive beech and fir trees blanket the lower elevations, providing a handy habitat for large predators such as wolves, lynxes, and brown bears, alongside reintroduced European bison. Following the Second World War, large portions of the region experienced significant depopulation, allowing nature to reclaim vast areas and preserving a unique wilderness character that endures today.
