Poloniny Bison Enclosure (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Bison Enclosure in Poloniny National Park is a cornerstone of the program to reintroduce the European bison (Bison bonasus) into the wild in Slovakia. Located in the far east of the country, the facility is situated in a region defined by vast primeval beech forests and minimal human presence. The first bison were brought here in 2004 from various European zoos and reserves to establish a sustainable local population. The enclosure serves as an acclimatization zone where animals adapt to the local environment before being released into the national park's wilderness. The European bison is the continent's largest land mammal and had previously been extinct in this area. Thanks to successful breeding and rewilding efforts, dozens of bison now roam freely in the Poloniny mountains. The project is part of an international conservation initiative aimed at preserving this endangered species. Visitors have the chance to observe these majestic animals from a safe distance and learn about Carpathian forest ecology.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to observe the European bison is from spring to autumn, when the animals are more frequently out in the open. In winter they tend to stay in sheltered areas, but can still be seen.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are when the bison are most active, especially while feeding. At midday they often rest in the shade, so cooler times of day are preferable.
📜
Etiquette
Always keep a safe distance of at least 30 metres from the bison, as they are large wild animals. Feeding or touching the animals is strictly prohibited to preserve their natural wariness.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with at least 8x magnification are recommended for observing the bison from a safe distance. Sturdy hiking boots are useful, as the terrain can be uneven.
🧭
Getting there
The bison enclosure is located in Poloniny National Park and is accessible by road from Snina. A car park is at the entrance, from where a short path leads to the enclosure.
🦌
What to expect
Bison watching requires patience - the animals spend a lot of time grazing and move slowly. Take your time and observe their natural behaviour calmly.
