Tarnica stands as the undisputed highest elevation of the Polish Bieszczady Mountains, dominating the surrounding poloniny with its characteristic, asymmetrical profile. The summit area, constructed from resistant sandstone beds of the Carpathian flysch zone, contrasts sharply with the gentler slopes and culminates in a rugged, rocky crown. On clear days, the panorama from Tarnica extends across the endless forests of the Eastern Beskids, reaching as far as the Ukrainian Gorgany to the east and the peaks of the High Tatras to the west. The vegetation around the summit is sparse, defined by alpine grasses and low shrubs, as the fierce winds prevent taller plants from taking root. A massive iron cross, commemorating Pope John Paul II, marks the highest point and serves as the destination for numerous hikers who tackle the demanding, steep final ascent over stone steps.

The most direct and popular ascent starts from the settlement of Wołosate, providing the shortest route. Alternatively, Ustrzyki Górne provides a beautifully scenic ridge traverse.
Best season
Late summer and autumn are universally considered best, revealing iconic golden, grassy alpine meadows. Winter transforms the area into a severe environment requiring special gear.
Terrain & paths
The trail from Wołosate consists of a consistent, fairly steep climb through forests before emerging onto the exposed ridge. The final segment to the cross is rocky and windswept.
What to bring
Durable hiking boots with strong ankle support are absolutely crucial for managing rocky sections near the summit. Carrying comprehensive windproof and waterproof layers is vital.
Parking
A designated paid parking lot is perfectly located at the Wołosate trailhead. In the peak months of summer, arriving extremely early is strongly advised to secure a good spot.
Safety
Winds on the upper ridges can be astonishingly fierce, capable of destabilizing even experienced hikers. To preserve delicate vegetation, it is strictly forbidden to stray off trails.
Time needed
The direct round-trip ascent from Wołosate normally takes three to four hours for average hikers. Selecting longer, more scenic loop trails across ridges demands a rigorous full day.
