Poloniny National Park (Slovakia)

Weather…

Poloniny National Park, established in 1997 in the extreme east of Slovakia on the border with Poland and Ukraine, protects one of the most intact forest landscapes in Europe. Covering an expanse of 298 square kilometers, it forms the Slovak part of the trilateral Eastern Carpathians Biosphere Reserve. The region is famous for its ancient, primeval-like beech stands, significant parts of which, such as the Stužica, Rožok, and Havešová reserves, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. Geologically, the park is characterized by flysch, an alternating sequence of sandstone and claystone, shaping gentle but heavily forested mountain ridges. A zoological highlight of the park is the presence of free-roaming European bison, which were successfully reintroduced in the 1990s. Furthermore, the area features extremely low light pollution, leading to the establishment of the Poloniny Dark-Sky Park, the first of its kind in Slovakia.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this easternmost national park involves traveling towards the border region, often starting from regional hubs and utilizing local bus or car routes. The entry points to the pristine forests are well-distributed among the small local villages.
📅
Best season
The most rewarding time to explore these primeval environments is between late spring and autumn, with autumn offering spectacular foliage colors. Winters are generally harsh and remote, recommended only for properly equipped enthusiasts prepared for deep snow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The region is defined by rolling hills and deep valleys covered entirely by majestic beech forests, leading up to vast mountain meadows. Trails can be surprisingly challenging due to isolation and sudden changes in elevation, presenting an authentic wilderness experience.
🎒
What to bring
Given the remote nature of the park, carrying sufficient food, abundant water, and highly reliable offline navigation tools is absolutely necessary. Sturdy footwear and weather-resistant clothing are required, as shelter options deep in the forests are exceedingly rare.
🅿️
Parking
Free or low-cost parking is usually available in the designated villages that border the protected wilderness zones. From these modest parking areas, visitors can easily access the primary trailheads leading directly into the ancient woodland.
⚠️
Safety
The sheer isolation means mobile phone coverage is often non-existent in the deep valleys, requiring self-sufficiency and careful planning. The pristine forests are also home to significant wildlife, so hikers should maintain awareness and respect the natural habitat rules.
⏱️
Time needed
To truly appreciate the deep tranquility and primeval scale of the park, allocating a full day is highly recommended. Serious explorers often plan multi-day hikes crossing the ridges, utilizing the basic designated shelters found along the international border.
