The Bieszczady National Park, located in the extreme southeast of Poland, protects the rugged, remote beauty of the Eastern Carpathians, a region celebrated for its near-total isolation and deep wilderness. The most striking feature of these mountains is the unique, expansive alpine meadows known as 'Poloninas', which carpet the peaks above the tree line and burst into animated colors during the summer months. These solitary plateaus offer wide-open panoramas, while the lower valleys are draped in dense, primeval-like Carpathian beech forests that rank among the best preserved in Europe. The absence of significant human settlements makes the Bieszczady the excellent habitat for Europe's apex predators; it harbors exceptionally dense populations of Eurasian wolves, brown bears, and Carpathian lynxes, alongside free-roaming herds of Hucul horses. This untamed wilderness is a sanctuary for adventurers and biologists eager to observe completely intact food webs.
