Kysuce Protected Landscape Area (Slovakia)

Weather…

In the rugged northwest of Slovakia, the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area stretches across a vast, mountainous expanse of 655 square kilometers. Established in 1984, the protected area encompasses parts of the Javorníky Mountains as well as the Kysuce Beskids and is characterized by a harmonious cultural landscape shaped by human activity. Here, dark spruce and fir forests alternate in a mosaic pattern with scattered mountain settlements, traditional wooden house architecture (kopanice), and terraced mountain meadows. Geologically, the region is dominated by soft flysch rock, which has led to the emergence of unique geomorphological phenomena such as the enigmatic sandstone spheres of Megonky. Despite centuries of agricultural use, Kysuce has remained a thriving wildlife habitat. The extensive cross-border forest corridors to the Czech Republic and Poland provide large predators like the wolf, Eurasian lynx, and brown bear with desperately needed living space and secure their European migration routes.
